Program notes
work songs is a suite of three pieces for low brass trio (horn, trombone, tuba). While not directly quoting any songs, the character of the pieces reminded me of various songs for work—spirituals, sea shanties, railroad songs, and the like. I have also been concerned in recent pieces (such as allies and shoulder to shoulder) about community, companionship, and the dignity of work. The first movement might represent a difficult day: waking up, getting ready, the grind of the work, and heading home. The second movement is a moment of rest and reflection. The third movement might represent our fast-paced modern life: the horn and trombone play buzzing activity in continual motion, while the tuba anchors the proceedings with a sense of purpose.
