Program note: 5th W explores vowels and timbral connections among these aerophone instruments (voice, trumpet, trombone, and bass clarinet). The work explores the word “why,” extrapolating the vowels ooh, ah, and ee. Obviously, plungers create a great “wah” sound, and I tried to emulate the nasal “ee” with straight mutes and the bass clarinet’s reedy lower register. The primary inspirations for this piece were Berio’s Sequenzas and Meredith Monk’s Dolmen Music.
